    The impact of influenza on the health related quality of life in China: an EQ-5D survey.

    BACKGROUND: Influenza causes considerable morbidity and mortality in China, but its impact on the health-related quality of life (HRQoL) has not been previously measured. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective telephone survey to assess the impact of influenza on the HRQoL among outpatients and inpatients using the EuroQoL EQ-5D-3Ā L instrument. Participants were individuals with laboratory-confirmed influenza infection registered by the National Influenza-like-illness Surveillance Network in 2013. RESULTS: We interviewed 839 of 11,098 eligible influenza patients. After excluding those who were unable to complete the HRQoL for the registered influenza episode, 778 patients were included in the analysis. Both outpatients (nĀ =Ā 529) and inpatients (nĀ =Ā 249) most commonly reported problems with pain/discomfort (71.8% of outpatients and 71.9% of inpatients) and anxiety/depression (62.0% of outpatients and 75.1% of inpatients). For individual influenza outpatients, the mean health utility was 0.6142 (SD 0.2006), and the average quality adjusted life days (QALD) loss was 1.62 (SD 1.84) days. The HRQoL of influenza inpatients was worse (mean health utility 0.5851, SD 0.2197; mean QALD loss 3.51Ā days, SD 4.25) than that of outpatients (pĀ <Ā 0.05). The presence of underlying medical conditions lowered the HRQoL for both outpatients and inpatients (pĀ <Ā 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Influenza illness had a substantial impact on HRQoL. QALD loss due to an acute influenza episode in younger children was comparable to that due to enterovirus A71-associated hand, foot and mouth disease. Our findings are key inputs into disease burden estimates and cost-effectiveness evaluations of influenza-related interventions in China

    Theoretical calculation boosting the chemical vapor deposition growth of graphene film

    Chemical vapor deposition (CVD) is a promising method for the mass production of high-quality graphene films, and great progress has been made over the last decade. Currently, the CVD growth of graphene is being pushed to achieve further advancements, such as super-clean, ultra-flat, and defect-free materials, as well as controlling the layer, stacking order, and doping level during large-scale preparation. The production of high-quality graphene by CVD relies on an in-depth knowledge of the growth mechanisms, in which theoretical calculations play a crucial role in providing valuable insights into the energy-, time-, and scale-dependent processes occurring during high-temperature growth. Here, we focus on the theoretical calculations and discuss the recent progress and challenges that need to be overcome to achieve controllable growth of high-quality graphene films on transition-metal substrates. Furthermore, we present some state-of-the-art graphene-related structures with novel properties, which are expected to enable new applications of graphene-based materials. (c) 2021 Author(s).     Clinical and epidemiologic characteristics of hospitalized patients with laboratory-confirmed respiratory syncytial virus infection in eastern china between 2009 and 2013: a retrospective study

    Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide in children aged &lt;5 years and older adults with acute lower respiratory infections (ALRIs). However, few studies regarding the epidemiology of hospitalizations for RSV infection have been performed previously in China. Here, we aimed to describe the clinical and epidemiologic characteristics of hospitalized patients with laboratory-confirmed RSV infection in eastern China. Active surveillance for hospitalized ALRI patients using a broad case definition based on symptoms was performed from 2009-2013 in 12 sentinel hospitals in eastern China. Clinical and epidemiologic data pertaining to hospitalized patients of all ages with laboratory-confirmed RSV infection by PCR assay were collected and analyzed in this study. From 2009 to 2013, 1046 hospitalized patients with laboratory-confirmed RSV infection were enrolled in this study, and 14.7% of patients had subtype A, 24.2% of patients had subtype B, 23.8% of patients with subtype not performed, and 37.3% of patients had RSV coinfections with other viruses. RSV and influenza coinfections (33.3%) were the most common coinfections noted in this study. Moreover, young children aged &lt;5 years (89.1%, 932/1046), particularly young infants aged &lt;1 year (43.3%, 453/1046), represented the highest proportion of patients with RSV infections. In contrast, older adults aged ?60 years (1.1%, 12/1046) represented the lowest proportion of patients with RSV infections among enrolled patients. The peak RSV infection period occurred mainly during autumn and winter, and 57% and 66% of patients exhibited symptoms such as fever (body temperature ?38Ā°C) and cough separately. Additionally, only a small number of patients were treated with broad-spectrum antiviral drugs, and most of patients were treated with antimicrobial drugs that were not appropriate for RSV infection. RSV is a leading viral pathogen and a common cause of viral infection in young children aged &lt;5 years with ALRIs in eastern China. Effective vaccines and antiviral agents targeting RSV are needed to mitigate its large public health impact

    H7N9 and H5N1 avian influenza suitability models for China: accounting for new poultry and live-poultry markets distribution data

    In the last two decades, two important avian influenza viruses infecting humans emerged in China, the highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N1 virus in the late nineties, and the low pathogenic avian influenza (LPAI) H7N9 virus in 2013. China is home to the largest population of chickens (4.83 billion) and ducks (0.694 billion), representing, respectively 23.1 and 58.6% of the 2013 world stock, with a significant part of poultry sold through live-poultry markets potentially contributing to the spread of avian influenza viruses. Previous models have looked at factors associated with HPAI H5N1 in poultry and LPAI H7N9 in markets. However, these have not been studied and compared with a consistent set of predictor variables. Significant progress was recently made in the collection of poultry census and live-poultry market data, which are key potential factors in the distribution of both diseases. Here we compiled and reprocessed a new set of poultry census data and used these to analyse HPAI H5N1 and LPAI H7N9 distributions with boosted regression trees models. We found a limited impact of the improved poultry layers compared to models based on previous poultry census data, and a positive and previously unreported association between HPAI H5N1 outbreaks and the density of live-poultry markets. In addition, the models fitted for the HPAI H5N1 and LPAI H7N9 viruses predict a high risk of disease presence for the area around Shanghai and Hong Kong. The main difference in prediction between the two viruses concerned the suitability of HPAI H5N1 in north-China around the Yellow sea (outlined with Tianjin, Beijing, and Shenyang city) where LPAI H7N9 has not spread intensely.SCOPUS: ar.jinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishe

    Cost-effectiveness of introducing national seasonal influenza vaccination for adults aged 60Ā years and above in mainland China: a modelling analysis

    BACKGROUND: China has an aging population with an increasing number of adults aged ā‰„ā€‰60ā€‰years. Influenza causes a heavy disease burden in older adults, but can be alleviated by vaccination. We assessed the cost-effectiveness of a potential government-funded seasonal influenza vaccination program in older adults in China. METHODS: We characterized the health and economic impact of a fully funded influenza vaccination program for older adults using China-specific influenza disease burden, and related cost data, etc. Using a decision tree model, we calculated the incremental costs per quality-adjusted life year (QALY) gained of vaccination from the societal perspective, at a willingness-to-pay threshold equivalent to GDP per capita (US8840).Moreover,weestimatedthethresholdvaccinationcosts,underwhichthefullyfundedvaccinationprogramiscostāˆ’effectiveusingGDPpercapitaasthewillingnessāˆ’toāˆ’paythreshold.RESULTS:Comparedtocurrentselfāˆ’paidvaccination,afullyfundedvaccinationprogramisexpectedtoprevent19,812(958840). Moreover, we estimated the threshold vaccination costs, under which the fully funded vaccination program is cost-effective using GDP per capita as the willingness-to-pay threshold. RESULTS: Compared to current self-paid vaccination, a fully funded vaccination program is expected to prevent 19,812 (95% uncertainty interval, 7150-35,783) influenza-like-illness outpatient consultations per year, 9418 (3386-17,068) severe acute respiratory infection hospitalizations per year, and 8800 (5300-11,667) respiratory excess deaths due to influenza per year, and gain 70,212 (42,106-93,635) QALYs per year. Nationally, the incremental costs per QALY gained of the vaccination program is US4832 (3460-8307), with a 98% probability of being cost-effective. The threshold vaccination cost is US$10.19 (6.08-13.65). However, variations exist between geographical regions, with Northeast and Central China having lower probabilities of cost-effectiveness. CONCLUSIONS: Our results support the implementation of a government fully funded older adult vaccination program in China. The regional analysis provides results across settings that may be relevant to other countries with similar disease burden and economic status, especially for low- and middle-income countries where such analysis is limited

    Risk maps are one of several sources used to inform risk-based disease surveillance and control systems, but their production can be hampered by lack of access to suitable disease data. In such situations, knowledge-driven spatial modeling methods are an alternative to data-driven approaches. This study used multicriteria decision analysis (MCDA) to identify areas in Asia suitable for the occurrence of highly pathogenic avian influenza virus (HPAIV) H5N1 in domestic poultry. Areas most suitable for H5N1 occurrence included Bangladesh, the southern tip and eastern coast of Vietnam, parts of north-central Thailand and large parts of eastern China. The predictive accuracy of the final model, as determined by the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC AUC), was 0.670 (95% CI 0.667-0.673) suggesting that, in data-scarce environments, MCDA provides a reasonable alternative to the data-driven approaches usually used to inform risk-based disease surveillance and control strategies

    Analysis of the response regulatory network of pepper genes under hydrogen peroxide stress

    Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is a regulatory component related to plant signal transduction. To better understand the genome-wide gene expression response to H2O2 stress in pepper plants, a regulatory network of H2O2 stress-gene expression in pepper leaves and roots was constructed in the present study. We collected the normal tissues of leaves and roots of pepper plants after 40 days of H2O2 treatment and obtained the RNA-seq data of leaves and roots exposed to H2O2 for 0.5ā€“24 h. By comparing the gene responses of pepper leaves and roots exposed to H2O2 stress for different time periods, we found that the response in roots reached the peak at 3Ā h, whereas the response in leaves reached the peak at 24Ā h after treatment, and the response degree in the roots was higher than that in the leaves. We used all datasets for K-means analysis and network analysis identified the clusters related to stress response and related genes. In addition, CaEBS1, CaRAP2, and CabHLH029 were identified through a co-expression analysis and were found to be strongly related to several reactive oxygen species-scavenging enzyme genes; their homologous genes in Arabidopsis showed important functions in response to hypoxia or iron uptake. This study provides a theoretical basis for determining the dynamic response process of pepper plants to H2O2 stress in leaves and roots, as well as for determining the critical time and the molecular mechanism of H2O2 stress response in leaves and roots. The candidate transcription factors identified in this study can be used as a reference for further experimental verification
